A full, healthy head of hair is central to our appearance and self-confidence.
If it begins to thin or fall out a bit too much for our liking, it can be distressing.
Fortunately, there are several things that we can do to prevent hair loss or to encourage hair growth.
The most effective way to slow or stop hair loss is to address the underlying cause.
Sometimes, hair loss is temporary, and might have been caused by childbirth, surgery, or another major stressor.
Our rate of hair growth is influenced by a combination of things, including genetics, over-styling and a low iron count.
Increasing it can be tricky business.
If for example, we are planning on getting a full head of hair within 2 weeks and we are starting from a bald head of hair – or close to that, then we need to understand that this is unlikely to ever be achieved.
However, within this article, we give you the answers to maximizing the nurturing of your hair growth as much as possible within that 2-week period.
Over the years, the team at The Best In Singapore has experimented with loads of different hair products and home remedies, to try to get luscious, thick tresses – we all want to look good, no matter our age, gender, occupation, and whether or not we are vain (hehe).
After a lot of reading and heaps of testing, we’ve finally found the combination that actually works very well for each of us.
We know it’s hard to believe, but this article really can teach you how to get the hair you’ve always dreamed of…
(Pro-Tip: Whatever is good for your hair and scalp is also good for your skin, mood and overall appearance! So yes, making the effort is really worth it).

1. WATER YOUR HAIR
Staying hydrated is important.
It is also a factor that can contribute to having and maintaining hair that does not fall out easily.
Here are 4 ways that drinking water can improve hair growth:
A. Much like a plant needs water to grow, so does hair.
Water is a crucial ingredient that supports vitamins that contribute to your hair growth.
Incredible as it sounds, water makes up almost 25% of the weight of a single strand of hair.
This makes it easy to see why drinking at least two liters of water/fluids a day will help the strength of your hair, hence potentially increasing growth.
B. Dehydration immediately halts hair growth.
Our hair needs moisture.
When it doesn’t have the moisture it needs, your hair ends will split or become brittle.
This makes it difficult for hair to grow.
It is possible for one’s hair to stop growing completely if you’re not drinking enough water, so you do have to ensure that you drink enough water every day.
C. Drinking water also triggers the energy that is transmitted at the scalp that runs to your hair’s end.
D. When the roots are hydrated, this will reduce scalp problems like dandruff.
Dandruff means the scalp is not at its optimal health. Which also means that it will be more difficult to encourage hair growth.
There are endless benefits of drinking water.
By drinking the water that your body needs, your skin, scalp and your entire body will function significantly better than it would without enough hydration.
To get thicker and healthier hair, the first thing to do is to drink more water!

2. WHAT MAKES YOUR HAIR GROW?
We are born with all the hair follicles we will ever have.
Hair growth originated from small skin organs called follicles in a complex process that is tightly regulated by hormones.
On average, our head alone has between 80,000 to 120,000 follicles, which grow and shed hair in a continuous cycle called the follicle cycle.
The length of this cycle varies from person to person, but the average is up to 13 years.
In total, the growth cycle for each hair on your scalp can take 2 to 6 years.
Nearly everyone has some hair loss with aging. As we age, some follicles stop producing hair.
The rate of hair growth also slows. This is due to natural ageing processes that occur within the hair follicle.
On average, Asian hair is the thickest and most coarse hair compared to Caucasian and African hair.
The coarse hair of a young adult eventually becomes thin, fine, light-colored hair as we grow older.
These factors cause baldness, hair thinning, and the greying of our hair.
Ageing follicles are also more likely to stop producing melanin.
Melanin is the protein responsible for creating the rich colour seen in our hair.
Reductions in melanin production is the reason our hair turns grey in colour.
On average, hair grows about 1.3 cm (0.5 inches) per month, or approximately 0.3 to 0.45mm per day.
However, this can vary depending on the individual.
The speed at which our hair grows depends on diet (and nutritional deficiencies), age, health, genetics, thyroid function (and hormonal fluctuations), stress levels, and the shape of our follicles.
Generally, the growth rate is the same for women and men and for hair that grows on different areas of the body.
Hair grows faster from the age of 15 to late 20’s, and slows down considerably after that, especially with the onset of menopause.
It is natural to lose about 100 hairs every day.
Many postmenopausal women will experience hair loss as a result of changing hormone levels.
Some men will experience gradual hair thinning as they age.
Typically, as much as 85% of men will have thinner hair by age 50.
Men may start showing signs of baldness by the time they are 30 years old. Many men are nearly bald by age 60.
As we age, we will find that our hair stops growing after a certain point.
Maybe it seems to be thinning in a certain area, or it won’t grow past a certain length, or you notice that one side seems to grow more quickly than the other.
Talk to your doctor if you’re experiencing any other symptoms of an underactive thyroid, which may include constant fatigue or trouble losing weight.

3. CAN MORE HAIR GROW, AND FASTER?
Although we can’t change the number of hair follicles we have, we may naturally help increase our hair density by eating a well-balanced diet that includes hair-growth nutrients like those listed below.
First, make sure you’re eating a healthy diet full of protein, Vitamins A and C, and omega-3 fatty acids. These, and other nutrients that are essential for hair growth.
Diet is just as important for us on the outside as it is on the inside.
Spinach is a particularly important vegetable for hair growth, as it’s high in protein and Vitamins A and C which your body needs to produce sebum which moisturises your scalp.
A deficiency in these vitamins can result in brittle hair or even hair loss so make sure you are eating lots of spinach every few days.
Broccoli is another of the best greens you can eat for excellent hair health.
As well as Vitamin A and C it also contains essential B vitamins that are needed for strong, glossy, and luxuriant hair.
The antioxidants in broccoli, particularly vitamin C also prevent hair loss by eliminating free radicals. This will contribute to thicker and healthier hair.
Both of these veggies are reasonably priced, so make sure you eat at least one portion of either, once a day.
You’ll start to notice not only a healthier bowel, but your skin hair and nails should look better than ever too.
In addition, be sure to gently care for your hair, for example, using sulfate-free shampoos and including oil like coconut in your conditioners.

4. I SEE CLUMPS OF HAIR DROPPING OFF EACH TIME I SHAMPOO
It is normal to lose anywhere between 50-100 strands of hair daily because of the normal growth cycle.
If you have longer hair, this may be even more noticeable.
Some shedding is temporary and may respond well to changes in diet, certain treatments, or lifestyle changes.
Other hair loss may be more permanent, or not stop until an underlying condition is treated.
Hair loss happens when the hair growth cycle decelerates, and excessive hair falls.
Some loss is to be expected as part of your hair growth cycle, particularly when washing and brushing hair.
However, if you are seeing 150 or more strands in your hands at one time or persistently high volumes of shedding for a few weeks then it’s likely you are suffering from loss.
Lost hair does come back as most cases are temporary but there are ways to encourage hair to regrow naturally such as using naturally derived products and even exercising regularly to ensure you are encouraging blood circulation.
It’s possible to see some improvement in as little as 4 weeks with impactful results by weeks 8 to 12 in your hair regrowth journey.
But if you experience unexplained and/or severe and sudden hair loss, loss in patches, or overall thinning, you should schedule a checkup with your doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions and to discuss your options.
Any concerns regarding reduced hair growth, extremely damaged hair, or any significant changes to your hair should be addressed with a doctor.
In such cases, treating the underlying cause may help reverse hair loss issues.
They can check for possible nutrient deficiencies and recommend specific treatments that may help.
There are various reasons for hair loss ranging from genetics to stress.
The most common cause of male and female pattern baldness is that it’s hereditary, occurring with age but other problems can include thyroid deficiencies, hormonal changes, medications, radiation or chemotherapy treatment, stress, hairstyles, or inappropriate hair treatments.

5. SHOULD I WASH MY HAIR LESS OFTEN?
Regular washing
Washing your hair daily may protect against hair loss by keeping the scalp healthy and clean.
The key is to use mild shampoo.
Harsher formulas may dry hair and cause it to break, leading to hair loss.
Using products that contain ingredients like biotin, keratin or coconut oil can help strengthen your hair and promote increased hair length.
Use conditioner every time you shampoo. It not only helps your hair behave and look better, it strengthens it and shields it from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
If you have fine hair, apply it to just the bottom of your hair to avoid weighing it down.
For coarse hair, coat the tips well to nourish those fragile ends.
It is a common misconception for people that hair washing causes hair loss.
When we wash our hair daily, we often see a larger volume of loose strands being washed away.
However, if we don’t regularly wash our hair, we are allowing dirt and oils to build upon the scalp which clogs pores, causing further loss and preventing regrowth.
Natural oils, hair products, scalp sebum, and even air pollution can all accumulate on our hair, causing buildup to clog the scalp pores.
Over time, dirty hair and clogged pores can lead to conditions such as folliculitis, which can further worsen hair loss.
Folliculitis is a common skin condition that happens when hair follicles become inflamed. It’s often caused by an infection with bacteria. At first it may look like small pimples around the hair follicles. The condition can be itchy, sore and embarrassing.
Singapore’s weather is hot and humid.
When we wash our hair daily, the shampoo will help eradicate the dirt and grime that can contribute to any hair loss problems we may be experiencing.
Dirty hair is widely misunderstood as a good practice for hair growth. It’s easy to see why this is done, but dirt in your hair does not promote growth or length retention.
The truth is that hair needs to be cleaned regularly.
One of the reasons some people believe that less washing promotes growth is that over-washing causes dryness, brittleness, and breakage.
Yes, if we shampoo too frequently (for example, twice a day) using harsh chemicals and without conditioning well, our hair will dry out and break.
The more water we use to moisturize your hair and scalp, the healthier our scalp will be. A clean, healthy scalp promotes hair growth.
The bottom line is that dirty hair does not grow faster than clean hair, so we might as well have a clean scalp and fresh hair.
Our hair will look better, feel better, and be healthier as a result.
Do hot showers cause hair loss?
No, hot showers do not cause hair loss.
But extremely hot water can damage keratin, the protein that makes up hair strands.
Water that is very hot may also strip away the natural oils that keep our scalp and hair healthy.
If our hair is already dry or damaged, washing it in hot water can make it more likely to break.
To avoid damage, use lukewarm water instead of hot water.
Avoid brushing and stretching your hair while wet, and use a deep, moisturizing conditioner regularly.
Rinse hair with cold water
Warm water will cause follicles to open, enabling us to clean the scalp thoroughly.
It’s important, however, to finish off with a blast of cold water to close them again to reduce hair loss and frizz.
This one step alone can make a huge difference to our hair, helping it to grow faster and fall less.

6. TREATMENTS, AND CLINICALLY-PROVEN MEDICATIONS
There are several products that claim to promote hair growth.
Some of these have been shown to be effective when clinically tested for hair growth and have shown positive results, while others have not.
Minoxidil (the active ingredient in the brand Rogaine) is one of the most popular and clinically-proven products available.
Considered to be the number one over-the-counter dermatologist-recommended brand of minoxidil, Rogaine is available in Singapore pharmacies.
Considered the number one dermatologist-recommended brand of minoxidil, this OTC treatment by Rogaine is said to boost hair regrowth by supporting hair follicle and protein production.
It is applied topically to the scalp.
As a vasodilator, it is thought to work by widening or reinvigorating the hair follicle so that more blood can reach the follicles, promoting cell turnover and supporting protein production..
When used daily for 3 to 6 months, minoxidil 5% has been shown to slow hair loss.
This can also allow for stronger, thicker hair growth.
Side effects include scalp irritation and acne at the site of application. Rarer side effects include irregular heartbeat and blurred vision.
Doctor-prescribed finasteride (brand name Propecia) may promote hair growth and reduce the rate of hair loss in male-pattern baldness.
It works by blocking an enzyme known as 5-alpha-reductase, which causes hair loss. It recently showed promise for women experiencing hair loss.
You may need to use the medication for as long as 12 months to see any results. It also has various side effects, including loss of libido and erectile dysfunction.
People who are or who may become pregnant should avoid this medication.

7. DELICIOUS FOOD THAT HELP HAIR GROW
Diet
As with most things health and beauty, diet plays an enormous role in not only the condition of your hair, but also your rate of hair growth.
Start at the fundamentals, and ensure you maintain eating a healthy, balanced diet consisting of protein and iron rich foods as well as sources of vitamin A.
Not only will this help with hair regrowth but also work to repair and maintain those all-important hair follicles that work to regulate hair growth.
Your diet could be deficient in vitamins, minerals and protein if your hair won’t grow.
Your body requires a lot of energy to make your hair grow, so getting too few calories and certain nutrients can affect it.
A poor, unbalanced diet can contribute to hair loss and balding.
Foods known to encourage hair growth include spinach, meat, eggs, oily fish and avocados.
Many of these food items are rich in proteins, iron, vitamins A, B-12, C, and D, and omega-3 which are known to improve growth and leave you with thick, healthy hair.
Vitamins and nutrients known to aid hair loss and growth are vitamin B12, calcium, copper, selenium, magnesium, zinc and iron. A daily multivitamin may help to boost the presence of these in your body.
Include these in your daily consumption of food, to achieve healthy hair and overall physical well-being:
A. Mediterranean diet
A diet containing raw vegetables and fresh herbs, like the Mediterranean diet, may reduce the risk of androgenic alopecia (female pattern baldness or male pattern baldness) or slow its onset.
B. Protein
Hair follicles are made mostly of a protein called keratin. A study of 100 people with hair loss in 2017 noted several nutritional deficiencies in participants, including amino acids that serve as the building blocks of protein.
Healthy choices of food that promote hair growth and overall well-being include foods like eggs, nuts, beans and peas, avocado, fish, low-fat diary products, chicken, sweet potatoes, turkey, berries, and spinach.
Generally, it’s best to get your vitamins and nutrients from your diet.
Talk with your doctor before trying supplements like biotin, keratin, or other nutrients. They may interact with any medications you take and cause unintended side effects.

8. CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE (A LITTLE), TO GET A FULLER HEAD OF HAIR – AND BETTER OVERALL HEALTH
Following these simple lifestyle changes and introducing some key, natural ingredients to our hair care will benefit our hair growth journey immensely.
Whilst we can’t expect to see a full head of hair in as little as 4 weeks, it is possible to see some positive change.
Consistency and patience will pay off quickly in our steps to resolve hair loss issues.
Avoid crash dieting (H3)
Restrictive dieting can decrease resources and nutrients needed for hair growth.
Sudden weight loss can cause temporary shedding of hair.
When you want to shed kilograms, make sure your hair doesn’t go with them.
Just as stress can trigger hair loss, so can sudden weight loss.
To help prevent hair loss, avoid extreme dieting, very low protein diets, and other restrictive diets.
It is important to note that if you don’t eat enough protein, your body will use what it can get – and hair growth is low priority when the body is in crisis mode.
Among other factors, hair loss may also be caused by a deficiency of nutrients such as fatty acids, and zinc.
When your nutrition returns to normal, hair is likely to grow back (even after still continuing to shed), but only after a few months.
It’s much better for you – and your hair – to follow a healthy, slower-paced diet plan.

9. HOLD THE HEAT
Avoid heat damage.
- Decreasing the temperature of heated styling tools can also help reduce hair damage.
- Use the coolest setting, if possible.
- And avoid using heat every day.
- Work quickly, so that the heat stays on your hair as little as possible.
- Overusing heat styling tools can damage your hair and lead to breakage.
- If you’re looking to lengthen your hair, try to give your hair a break from heat styling as much as possible.
- Heat from curling irons, hair dryers, and straighteners can damage your hair and cause breakage.
- While avoiding heat styling altogether may not be an option, you may want to try limiting how often you use these tools.
- Using a heat protectant product before using a heated styling tool may significantly reduce hair breakage.
- These heat treatments work by forming a protective barrier that helps prevent moisture loss when using heated tools.
If you want to encourage your hair to grow faster, the best thing to do is leaving it to air dry, avoiding styling, and leaving it loose or tying it in low hairstyles.

10. REDUCE STRESS
Physical and psychological stress can cause hair loss.
Surgery, high fevers, and blood loss can cause enough stress to result in excessive shedding.
Childbirth can result in hair loss for several months after delivery.
As for psychological stress, the link is less well-defined. However, many people have reported losing hair at times of extreme mental stress or anxiety.
And hair loss for other reasons (known or unknown) can still be stressful.
The causes of physical stress are often temporary, and the hair loss subsides as the body heals.
Chronic (long term) stress can lead to hair loss. It may cause your follicles to go into a resting phase during which they shed hair instead of growing new strands.
Serious stress can send hair into a resting phase, skipping the stage that coaxes it to grow.
It may put you at higher risk for a condition called alopecia areata, where your own immune system attacks your hair follicles.
It could also lead to trichotillomania, a strong urge to pull out your hair.
Your hair might grow back when you reduce the stress in your life or find ways to manage it.
Taking part in regular exercise will be of particular benefit if your hair loss is stress-related.
Exercise is proven to relieve the symptoms of stress.
Just 20-30 minutes of walking every day is enough to reduce tension, anxiety or depression you may be experiencing that contributes to your hair loss.
Exercising consistently is a healthy habit to adopt but it will also improve your circulation which will further encourage hair regrowth.
Set yourself a fitness challenge to give yourself some accountability and ensure you are maintaining a consistent exercise routine, to further encourage blood circulation as well as relieve life stresses.

SUMMARY
The key to hair that grows well is healthy hair, and the secret to healthy hair is a healthy scalp.
Healthy skin and hair begin from a solid foundation of healthy lifestyle factors such as proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and regular exercise.
While genetics does play a role in hair growth, several other factors also come into play.
And while there’s no magical formula for instant hair growth, there are steps you can take to boost the health and growth of your hair.
Eating a healthy diet that includes key nutrients as well as adequate protein is very important.
Using certain products and treatments may promote hair growth.
Reducing heat treatments and chemical processing can help, too.
If you’re feeling ill when you begin to notice hair loss, or if your scalp feels painful or irritated, it’s a good idea to check in with your doctor. They’ll help you to find the cause of the problem.
Doctors can help diagnose any health conditions that may be contributing to the hair loss, and develop a treatment plan.
Before taking a prescription drug or undergoing a medical procedure, you’ll also need to check in with your dermatologist or primary care physician.
While sudden or extreme hair loss can be alarming, there are often simple solutions.
By addressing the underlying cause and making some lifestyle changes, it’s sometimes possible to stop or prevent hair loss.
At the end of the day, hair growth is still a bit of a mystery to scientists and skin experts alike, so no one solution will work for everyone.
We are learning more about how hair growth is controlled at a cellular level, but scientific evidence on how to speed up hair growth directly is still lacking, and certain methods have not been rigorously studied.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t (safely) try incorporating certain products or foods into your routine to at least see if they give your hair a boost.
