A Level Tuition Singapore
Hello 🙂 I am Amelia Lee, PhD – Princeton University, Materials Science Engineering.
I am one of the co-founders of The Best In Singapore, and I lead our Education Division comprising over 55,000 of Singapore’s most qualified and experienced home tutors.
Since 2011, we have established a strong track record of helping our students achieve better grades.
You have probably heard about us from your school teachers, classmates, relatives or colleagues.
Getting into a good school and maintaining good grades is important for anyone who wants to do well in their chosen career – whether you plan to eventually work in Singapore, Asia, Europe or the United States.
Exams now require students to be able to remember large chunks of information, analyze complicated scenarios and then come up with appropriate answers.
The marking schemes for all exams in Singapore are very rigid and strict.
Pupils must give a fixed set of answers that is on the SEAB-MOE’s approved list. Any slight deviations will lead to a loss of marks.
Students must therefore learn from tuition teachers who have strong subject and curriculum knowledge, and who are highly experienced in helping their students give the correct answers within these tight parameters.
The easier part of all these important tasks is probably the memorization of content from your textbooks.
It certainly is more challenging to be able to correctly develop your higher-order thinking skills, which are the very techniques that you must have so that you can have a breakthrough in grades.
Once you can synthesize the content in the MOE syllabus, you will then need to apply the analyses are required by the increasingly difficult exam questions.
Your school teachers are very good, but they are sometimes too busy to answer every question that you have.
Home tutors from The Best In Singapore teach you how to learn.
In order to consistently achieve higher grades, you need appropriate guidance from exceptional home tutors who:
- Have proven track records of guiding their students to better understand and apply the complex information
- Help you avoid careless mistakes
- Can identify what the exam questions really want you to do
- Are able to give you valuable strategies to answer difficult exam questions
- Assist you in producing answers that fit within what the SEAB-MOE has firmly established as the only answers that they will accept
Being astute and pragmatic educationists ourselves, we include tutors in our team only if they have between 2 to over 30 years of teaching/tutoring experience. They are MOE teachers, or experienced tutors with PhD/Master’s/Bachelor’s/university undergraduates in the subject that they give home tuition in.
Choose tutors with proven track records today, so that you will gain many marks in time for the coming major exams.

The importance of the GCE A Levels
The Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCE A-Level) is a widely recognised academic qualification that is taken by school and private candidates in Singapore.
National and school exams are transparent, objective and impartial in their standards.
They are possibly the most meritocratic way for students from all walks of life in Singapore and all over the world to have fair access to educational and employment opportunities, and social mobility.
Examinations in various moulds and permutations cannot be completely eradicated.Â
Given their importance both for individual students and the rest of society, it makes perfect sense for students to want to enhance their chances of examination success.
Potential employers often consider the results of a candidate’s A Level results, and consider those grade profiles as a basic education qualification in addition to the results of a university degree.
For the GCE A Levels, students are tested on subjects such as General Paper, Knowledge and Inquiry, Project Work, Mother Tongue Languages, Foreign Languages, Art, China Studies in English, Economics, Geography, History, Literature in English, Management of Business, Mother Tongue Language & Literature, Music, Theatre Studies and Drama, Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Mathematics. Physics, and/or Principles of Accounting.
Across university courses in engineering, science, business, medicine, law, humanities, arts, and social science, the prerequisites are not the same. An aspiring pharmacist might prioritise Chemistry and Biology, while a student who wants to work in Finance in the maritime sector might might be more focused on Principles of Accounting and Economics.
By optimising your preparation efforts, you can boost your chances of qualifying for your preferred university and academic courses.
Of course, many worthwhile goals in life cannot be measured by test scores.
It is however, still important for students to perform well in their GCE A Level examinations so that they can have a wide scope of options available when they have to choose their courses in University.
The types of courses that students are able choose in University is then what shapes their career – or at the minimum, their first job.
The Junior College/Integrated Programme curriculum is designed to equip students with a comprehensive skill set, which will provide them with a robust foundation for their tertiary education and enhance their career development in the future.
The MOE plans to eventually place a greater emphasis on adaptive and inventive thinking, communication skills and civic literacy.Â
In the meantime, the GCE A Level exams will still be a core tool for universities to decide whether or not to accept a candidate’s application for entry, and for competitive courses.Â
The Best In Singapore has a team of 13,200 qualified and experienced A Level tutors who have proven abilities to guide their students to score better in their promo’s and A Level exams.
WHEN ARE THE A LEVELS HELD?
The examinations are held once a year and most papers are held throughout November, and some subjects have exams in the first week of December.
Exams for some subjects are spread over 2 to 4 subjects. This can mean that after the first paper is completed, Paper 2 might be held more than a week later.
You can access the examination timetable on the SEAB website to get the exact dates and times.
Your school will also likely run through details with you during exam briefings.
HOW LONG IS EACH A LEVEL PAPER?
The duration of the exam depends on the paper’s topic and structure.
Depending on the subject and level of study, the duration ranges from one hour to three hours, conducted either in the morning or afternoon.
Sometimes, students would have to complete two different papers for two different subjects on the same day.
This means that the student will have to recall the right content for the right subjects.
It is important that you are able to identify key words in exam questions and then to craft answers to best meet examiners’ expectations.Â
Recalling every detail, constructing compelling answers, and writing them down within limited time duration often cause students to feel stressed before they take their exams.
WHAT SKILLS DO THE A LEVELS TEST STUDENTS ON?
A Level exams test students’ ability to link concepts and apply the knowledge to solve real-world problems.
You will be tested on your ability to demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills to novel dilemmas or situations.
These objectives are no different from the exams that students have been taking since upper primary school and throughout secondary school/the integrated programme – for example, about 40 per cent of PSLE questions are structured to test higher-order thinking skills.
The main difference – of course – is that there is significantly greater breadth and depth in the A Level syllabus.
Students are expected to gauge what kinds of concepts are relevant, and can be linked together when answering the questions that are being asked.
All this while being able to answer appropriately using the right key words.
Any deviation from the tight parameters that the MOE/SEAB accepts in their scoring template will result in an immediately loss of marks.
HOW TO DO WELL IN THE A LEVELS
The maximum number of rank points (RP) a student can score at the A Levels is 90.
When you allocate enough time to study topics that are your least favourite, you are likely to eventually get better grades for that subject.
Remember: you have good and bad study days.
Do not feel discouraged by setbacks.
Stick to a regular study plan and cover each topic diligently.
REGULARLY REVIEW CURRENT AND PAST TOPICS
Each time you find a key concept, summarize it using words that are meaningful to you so that you can remember better.
There will be times when you walk out of a lecture feeling like you did not quite understand anything at all.
Everyone goes through this, whether in JC or university.
We almost never remember or completely understand something after hearing about it for the first time.
It is therefore important to be resilient.
When you schedule time to consistently read and re-read the content in your syllabus, you are ensuring that you can master whatever you have understood and memorized.
Subject tests and school exams during JC1 and JC2 are good opportunities for you to review all the topics while preparing for the A Levels.
Questions that you will encounter during school exams and the A Levels will typically be built upon foundational concepts that test students’ higher-order capabilities and analytical skills.
When you encounter concepts that you need clarification for, note them down so that you can approach your school teacher, home tutor or JC peers to ask for their opinions.
(Fearlessly!) continue with the consistent, regular reviews of your notes and by the start of your A Levels, the important aspects will be all in your head.
CONSISTENCY IS IMPORTANT
Preparation is a sustained effort.
Starting three months before the prelims is not a good plan.
Since you know this, you should do something about it.
Shake off the lethargy and start preparation from – at the latest – the second half of JC1.
Start revising topics and when they are taught in school, so that they are repeated entrenched in your memory.
Create notes of key concepts and topics because your observations of what is crucial will help you closer to the exam.
Making revision a part of your daily routine would keep you exam-ready.
This will boost your confidence, and your positive energy levels will enable you to strive harder.
BE ORGANIZED
Set realistic goals.
Create a timetable for revision and research.
This is absolutely essential to ensure that you have covered the entire fast-paced syllabus that was taught in school.
Make sure that you do not miss anything out, when you are doing your revision.
Once you have determined the Master Plan of what you are including in your study schedule, you can then set and refine what the monthly, weekly and daily schedule will look like.
Then, break down the revision items into smaller, specific tasks.
Being consistent goes hand-in-hand with creating a personalized study plan.
Creating a realistic study plan allows students to spread out their revision load over the remaining weeks leading up to their exams.
The plan should cover every subject, every topic, and every study session.
Having a study plan also encourages students to learn to manage their time properly while keeping to other commitments in their life – CCA, hobbies/interests, family, and social time. It ensures that the students can pace themselves without the risk of burning out.
DO PRACTICE PAPERS FOR EACH SUBJECT
This will give you a better idea of the question types and the required answer formats.
Once you’ve gained a thorough understanding of the concepts, you have to practise with actual exam questions.
There’s really no better way to gear up for the A Levels.
You can also attempt mock tests closer to the exams, so that you have an indication of how exam-ready you are.
Treat this examination preparation method as an authentic rehearsal for the actual high-stakes A Level exams.Â
It is very beneficial to be familiar with the exam format, so that you can build confidence in meeting the assessment objectives as well as identify areas of weakness.
REPLICATE AN ACTUAL TIMED A LEVEL EXAM REQUIREMENTÂ
Time is the biggest enemy for any student during an exam.
You have to carefully consider how much time to spend on each question and how to choose the right question to answer.Â
By developing time management skills, you can reduce your anxiety leading up to, and during the exams.Â
Candidates must strategize and make use of the time productively.
This will prevent them from wasting their time unnecessarily on questions that will take too long to answer.
Find out what your challenges still are, and go back to practice these.
Scoring well in exams is not just about knowing the content – how you are able to answer the challenging application questions will determine whether you pass or get a distinction for that paper.
The only way to master this? Practice. Lots and lots of hours of practice.
IT IS SORT OF LIKE HOW YOU STUDIED FOR YOUR PSLE
Exams are like a battleground.
You have been there before, and you can learn from the experience, victories and how you conquered impediments along the way.
Tutors will prepare their students for the A-Level examination “battle” and students will eventually conquer their examination fearlessly.
Complete all your preparation about a month before your Prelims.
This will give you more confidence that you have completed the important tasks, and put you in a calmer state of mind.
You can then spend that month to refresh your memory of what you had learned during preparation.
The Prelims are also a great way to simulate how you will sit for the A Levels.
Don’t treat it as “merely” a test run.
You should treat it seriously and prepare for it as if it is the real thing.
Prelims will cover all the topics you had learnt in JC – and should cover everything that will also be test in the A Levels.
This means that your Prelims preparation – and even the taking of the Prelim exams itself – is a very useful and productive part of your preparation for the A Levels.
Be completely ready to take on the A Levels by the time you take the Prelims.

Comments and feedback of the results of hiring professional A Level tuition teachers from The Best In Singapore
There are some days when I think I should have gone to poly instead. Physics at JC level is really quite tough and I am having difficulty in completing my assignments. I listen carefully during lectures, but I just can't get it. Mr Fong is very systematic when teaching me the basics. I scored B3 in my O Level Physics, so some of my foundation knowledge is good enough. He built on that and reminded me that I already have skills to be able to learn more. I scored a B for my A Levels. Without Mr Fong, I would be lucky to score a low C.
Wenqi Soh
Temasek Junior College
I have always done well in the Sciences. General Paper has been challenging because I can't possibly be reading as much as what my JC teacher tells me to, because I have to spend time on my other subjects too. Ms Jane is a former journalist. She writes well (of course), and it's amazing how she analyzes such a broad range of topics. She taught me step by step how my logical reasoning can improve, and how to write according to what is required in the topic. I managed to score an A for my A Levels, along with the other A's for the Sciences.
Teo Wee Ren
National Junior College
My parents and I were shocked when I scored my second B for Math. I had always scored A's since primary school. Mr Kenneth Ang has a PhD in Computational Math, and he taught me many perspectives of Math. I am now majoring in Math at NUS.
Dhanesh Ramakrishnan
Victoria Junior College
Literature was more enjoyable when I was in secondary school. Maybe it's because I miss studying it with my friends, since they went to another JC. Ms Magdalene taught Lit at another JC, and she is very familiar with what I need to improve on. I still miss being able to study with my friends, but at least it is very comforting to know that I have a good tutor to guide me now.

How to choose the right A Level tuition teacher
Knowing if an A Level tuition teacher is suitable for your child can be challenging for a parent.
There are many things to consider, such as the A Level tuition teacher’s qualifications, experience, and personality.
Some key signs can help you determine whether a tutor is right for your child.
Here are five things to look for in a good home tutor:
This is the most crucial factor when deciding whether or not to hire a home tutor. When choosing an A Level tuition teacher, you should ensure that this person is knowledgeable in the content your child needs help with.
Technical knowledge is one’s level of understanding about a subject or procedure.
A Level tuition teachers should have an appropriate level of technical expertise to help their students master and advance in a particular chapter or skill area.
A private tutor who has taught and understands the challenges faced by children of different age groups and types of students’ learning capacities will also be beneficial to your child.
Having a positive attitude can make the difference between a motivated student and an unmotivated student.
A good A Level tuition teacher would give his/her students praise, emphasize their strong points and encourage them to challenge themselves.
To spark curiosity, motivate, and advance learning, tutors must be clear and engaging speakers.
To accurately respond to learners’ needs as their lessons progress, tutors must also be excellent active listeners.
Tutors must be good at using listening and oral response as informal assessments to move the lesson in a direction that best serves the learners.
It is essential to find an A Level tuition teacher who communicates concepts and ideas in a way your child can understand.
After all, the primary goal of any tutor – whether helping you with Chemistry, Math, Geography, Economics, or any other subject – is to ensure that you grasp the material correctly.
The best tutors listen intently to your questions and clearly explain solutions in language that is easy to comprehend. They break down complex topics into logical steps and provide real-world examples to illustrate and demonstrate.
Then, they apply the teaching strategies that best suit each learner, using the most effective methods for learning new subjects or reinforcing the knowledge they had already learnt in school.Â
Some people naturally enjoy learning, while others could enjoy learning more if they had the right person to help them.
That is why it is so crucial for A Level tuition teachers to show compassion towards their students who struggle with learning and retaining information.
Empathy can motivate tutors to be more aware of the areas that their students find challenging, while also empowering their students themselves to continue learning.
Patience – the ability to remain calm, open-minded and respectful – is an essential skill for tutors that want to promote a quality learning experience.
This is because tutors have advanced knowledge in a subject and need to help someone with little-to-no knowledge.
By staying calm, the tutor can ensure that the session runs smoothly, and also help the student to practice self-patience in order to conquer challenging topics.
An experienced A Level tuition teacher will take the time to understand where your children are struggling and explain concepts using words that make sense to them.
The tutor should also be able to adjust their teaching methods as needed, to meet students’ individual needs better.
An effective tutor will listen carefully and provide guidance with kindness and respect for the unique learning style.
Active listening is the process when someone demonstrates their attention toward the speaker by carefully observing, maintaining eye contact, nodding and interjecting dialogue when appropriate.
A Level tuition teachers should display active listening when a student describes their concerns or has a question.
This helps the student feel heard and valued, and also helps the tutor determine the best way to help them.
Students who engage a tutor want to correct a deficiency or boost their confidence in some topic. A disorganized, ill-prepared tutor can cause further problems in their learning.
Problem-solving – an ability to identify a problem and create solutions – contributes to a beneficial tutoring experience for students.
This is because tutors regularly help their students to solve problems, and to reach new skill levels in a topic.
Tutors should be able to identify the root cause of what is holding students back from fully understanding a topic, before starting to provide solutions.
When choosing an A Level tuition teacher, you must find someone with whom you can trust and work comfortably together.
It should feel like the tutor is trying to help your child learn and make the most out of each session.
Good tutors are friendly and respectful, take the time to listen to your children and understand their needs, provide constructive feedback, and make learning enjoyable while maintaining structure and discipline when needed.
Learners benefit from tutors who show up consistently, treat them honestly and kindly, and genuinely want to see them succeed.
In this way, trust is built, and students view the tutor as someone with integrity.
The heart of every tutoring session is the tutor’s ability to understand the student’s unique needs and help them improve.
With these qualities in mind, finding the right tutor can make all the difference in achieving success in your studies.
So, if your child is falling behind in school or wants a little extra help to get ahead, do not be afraid to reach out to a home tutoring service.Â
Just make sure you do your research and find someone knowledgeable in the subject you need help with, who can explain things in a way that you can understand, is patient and willing to answer all of your questions, and who makes you feel comfortable communicating with them.
